Краткая биография Сэмюеля Морзе (из серии ЖЗЛ) побудила меня перечитать “Голос через океан” Артура Кларка. Я скачал (и прочел) сетевое издание русского перевода этой книги в 2014 году, с подачи познавательной статьи на Хабре o трансокеаническиx подводныx кабелях связи. На этот раз, в свете относительно недавнего (и, откровенно говоря, запоздалого) решения читать англоязычные книги в оригинале, я добыл пэдээфку “Voice Across the Sea”, но решил также параллельно перечитывать русский перевод, с целью проверить, насколько добросовестно он был выполнен. Я допускал возможность политически мотивированной правки текста, но оказалось, что перевод в большей степени пострадал из-за недостаточной компетентности переводчика.

Back in 2018 a friend of mine asked me to assist with a project that required some expertise in C++ programming. I had to work on-site in their office. They provided me with a dedicated computer with a user account for which the initial password was set to 111. I changed it to a much stronger password of my own invention derived from the trivial fact that 111 is a product of 3 and 37. I completed my task within a few weeks and they were able to continue with the rest of the project on their own.
